2016 was officially recognised as the hottest year on record, but in Byron Bay, 2017 has started off with a series of scorchers sending holiday makers and locals in search of shady places and cooling waters.  The team at Byron Links Apartments have put together some local insider tips for guests to beat the heat.

• Byron Bay has some of the best coffee in the country, but a piping hot latte is not exactly the most refreshing beverage on a hot and humid day! Buy some whole or ground beans and make up a jug of ice-cold coffee just the way you like it, all in the air-conditioned comfort of your Byron Links Apartment.

• Head to the local markets in Byron or surrounding villages and grab some fresh salad ingredients for a healthy and refreshing lunch or dinner.

• Do as the Spanish do and have a siesta at your apartment when the midday sun is at its brightest and hottest.

• Enjoy a sunset or twlight drink on the deck at the Byron Bay Golf Club, with direct access from Byron Links Apartments.

• Take a drive to Minyon Falls Lookout. A scenic 45 minute drive from your apartment into Byron Shire’s lush hinterland, this spectacular waterfall plummets over 100m from the viewing platform. As well as amazing views of the World- Heritage rainforests and coastline, the elevated position and majestic eucalyptus forests are a fresh, cool location to spend some time.

•  Byron’ Shire’s beautiful beaches are justifiably famous, but there’s not always a lot of shade available. Take a short drive north to Brunswick Heads (pictured above). In addition to its surf beaches, the Brunswick River is a lovely place to cool off under the shade of a casuarina tree.

• Lake Ainsworth at nearby Lennox Head is another shady sanctuary to escape the heat. There are lots of trees  as well as free BBQs and picnic tables for feast just steps from a refreshing dip in the tea-tree lake.

In any one’s estimation, there’s been a lot not to like about 2016.  Terrorism and refugee crises, earthquakes and terrible accidents, the deaths of some of the world’s most beloved musicians (David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Prince, Leonard Cohen) not to mention a recent US election result that is still reverberating shock waves around the world.

But its not all been bad. In conservation, world populations of tigers and pandas are growing. Elephants are being treated with the dignity they deserve. As we’ve seen many times this winter and spring in Byron Bay, there have been record numbers of  whales migrating along the eastern seaboard. Cape Byron Lighthouse is probably the most spectacular places in Australia to see these magnificent creatures.

New therapies have been developed and advances made in cancer and Alzheimers disease treatment and prevention, and scientists are working on ways to improve the function of robotic limbs.

Environmentally, 50 million trees were planted in India in 24 hours by volunteers and Portugal and California are powering homes and entire cities for several days straight on solar power.

The 2016 Rio Olympics happened, but even better, the Paralympics got a lot of great publicity for the inspirational achievements of Paralympians. The “We Are the Superhumans promotional video above is one of the most inspiring You Tube clips published all year.

Also in sport, the Western Bulldogs, Leicester City and the Cronulla Sharks broke decade long droughts to win football premierships, some for the first time. (OK, so not everyone is happy about that, but gotta love the underdogs!)
